We live in a world where toxins are damaging everything in nature, and we’re seeing terrible effects like acid rain and global warming. It would be marvelous if we could reside on this remarkable planet without destroying it in the process. For city-dwellers it might appear to be a tantalising mirage to think of inhaling cool, clean air into their lungs, with no harmful poisons or toxins. We’re already paying the price, though, for the pollution we keep producing; the environment and our physical well-being is being made vulnerable by the air’s toxicity.

We humans find it hard to avoid the fallout from the disastrous influence that pollution, such as oil and chemical spills, is having on our oceans and all its inhabitants. For many people who earned a living from the sea by fishing they no longer have a job because of pollution. Since way back in time, fishing has fed and given economic means to a substantial section of our population, all of which is currently being taken from many. Still fresh in our memories is the Deepwater Horizon spill, which gave abundant testimony to the disastrous consequences of oil spills, causing the loss of many jobs and costing billions of dollars. The food chain and the whole of the ecosystem sustained serious damage, as a direct consequence of the deaths of large numbers of not only fish but also birds. An unfortunate example of human beings prioritising its short-term need for oil, a dead substance, over the well-being of the earth and its other inhabitants.

Vast amounts of money are invested in oil exploration when the money could be used investing in alternative green energy techniques or research into green energy. The possibility of providing large amounts of green energy is huge, without harming the environment. One would think it’s a no-brainer, given the possibilities offered by green energy alternatives, along with their being passive towards the environment. One alternative that will heat water and also provide electricity, is solar panels, which are very efficient in sunny locations. And something that’s every bit as simple in concept, wind turbines, employs another free resource (wind) to provide energy. So long as the wind blows – and many turbines work well at lower wind speeds – a wind turbine will work, which is a neat advantage. Oil damages the earth and it will eventually run out, so it’s important to invest in green energy production now more than ever. If we did that, global warming as well as the other ruinous results of pollution could perhaps be stopped, and just possibly reversed.

The immediate beneficiaries will be ourselves, and of course our descendants in the longer term. Rather than being at the mercy of extreme weather patterns and harsh living conditions, our children, and their children, could live happily in a clean, beautiful, and bounteous environment. This won’t be feasible unless we start living green and helping the environment.

It will be worth all the money, time and substantial effort needed, if we can stop the constant march of the harm we are doing to our planet.
