Blackle will save some energy if you have a older type of monitor (the big style - CRT). If you have a LCD monitor (flat screen, laptop) - the specific color on the screen doesn't make a lick of difference in how much energy is required (changing colors is what uses more energy in an LCD monitor). For an LCD, there is always a background light, and little filters change what color the monitor displays (the same amount of energy is required to filter either black or white light). The bigger issue is - LCDs require something like 16W to stay on, vs. CRTs which require 65W (on average, and those numbers should probably be double checked). Even with a black background - CRTs are way way less efficient than an LCD screen (with black or white background). And, the CRTs are quickly becoming obsolete. One thing to think about is that as CRTs become obsolete, people might start making decisions between an LCD monitor and a plasma monitor. WAY more energy is consumed by plasma compared to LCD (and both technologies would not change consumption using Blackle I think). That being said, there's a lot of research going on with plasma - maybe in 10 years it will be more efficient than LCDs.

Hey, consider the following site for your next list:
www DOT discoverperfectenergy DOT com

It used to be a paid deal, but is now free for both consumers and companies. It helps people to connect with green contractors.
