Solvents from regular paints are entering the environment and I am sure we would all wish this could be prevented. VOCs, short for Volatile Organic Compounds, are entering the air surrounding us. The dangers with this are the issue of smog, the adverse effect on the ozone layer and concerns linked to global warming. Global warming issues mean that the public are trying to look for more options in their choice of paints. Eco friendly paints were in fact first made available back in the early 1990s, but they were not popular at all and they didn’t impress the public.

Since people are now becoming conscious of the environmental concerns, will eco friendly paints be more widely chosen? But, there’s a further issue to deal with: the painting pros. The contradicting views mean that, based on some of these paint experts, paints that have the volatile organic compounds are better to use. The points the paint experts make are that paint that is environmentally friendly is not as efficient to use. But, taking into account that VOCs are attributed to health concerns, like asthma and headaches, an increasing number of people are converting from paints containing VOCs to eco friendly paints, giving the industry no option but to react.

Water based latex paints having binding qualities can be a way to deal with this dilemma. Due to the fact that they’re water based, it means that they’re eco friendly (VOCs are absent). The water based attribute of latex paint means that painting on iron is an issue because of rusting. Nevertheless, customers are turning more frequently to latex paints.

How paint is manufactured and where it originates from, all goes to define if it is eco friendly. For example, Titanium Dioxide is widely used in a lot of paints because of its white color, which means it is is able to cover other paints. Sulfuric acid is a by-product in the production of Titanium Dioxide. Sulfuric acid, along with the chemical substances that were dissolved in it, was released into the sea, which obviously is not healthy for the environment.

Smog is caused by Titanium Dioxide reacting with the sun when used outside. The knowledge that carcinogens could induce cancer is a is real worry since it has a link with Titanium Dioxide. Titanium Dioxide continues to be found in paints despite all of this evidence.

Folks are becoming more and more aware of the problems normal paints pose to both their health and to the environment, so it isn’t surprising to know that eco friendly paints are becoming more popular.
